Actions on the physical level can only be explained using words, and words cannot really describe or explain what meditation is.
True meditation, in our understanding, is being totally in the moment, outside of past and future.
Have you ever sat around a campfire with good friends, sharing good conversation? You may have noticed that occasionally all conversation ceases, and a conversation of silence takes hold.
As you gaze into the flames, your mind wanders as it is both tied down and released at the same time by the fascination, dance, glowing vision before you. At such a time, your logical mind might relax into a creative state which may produce new insights and conversations. You may feel like sitting silent and just letting time go. But during some of the silences, you may have slipped into a true meditative state, where you simply are not holding any conscious thought in your mind at all.
What we call the physical plane is the actual reality of daily life, and it is dependent upon concepts of the past and the future for its existence. The very dirt we stand upon is the geologic past and our next breath is our future. Meditation is the search for our own eternal inner present.
We believe that meditation is a space in which you attempt to temporarily step away from the bonds of the brain. The brain is simply a fleshy computer, a useful implement for our souls while we are abiding in the physical plane.
We are much more than this physical brain. We tend to forget (do we forget, or does our brain just forget?) this fact and become slaves to this physical computer, ‘thinking’ that is all we are. The brain is necessary and helpful at times, of course, but in meditation the goal is to rest the brain while still being totally aware through that part of us that is metaphorically bigger than the brain, outside of what the brain deals with. This is difficult to accomplish because the brain is a spoiled tyrant that does not give up control easily. We must trick it into letting go.
